French is the national language of more that 150 million people in the world. Every year 350,000 students of all ages, nationalities and professions make use of the services offered by the Alliance Française of Paris.
The Alliance Française is a non-money making public association created in 1883, transcends all religious, political and racial issues. It has 28 branches in France and 1085 others distributed in138 countries. The Alliance Française of St Lucia was created in 1953 and had its status defined by the Alliance Francaise of Paris in 1994. Originally established in central Castries, the Alliance Française of St. Lucia has been operating since 1991 in the Pyramid at Point Seraphine.
Each branch recognised by the Alliance Française of Paris, is registered in the host country in accordance with local laws. Each branch is self sufficient and is administered by a local committee comprising individuals from the economic, scientific and cultural sectors. The Alliance Française is geared at transmitting the French language and culture by means of:
° teaching (the oral and written language, professional French, literature…);
° Organisation of cultural and social activities;
° Exchanges and encounters with cultural groups from around the world;
The Alliance Française of St Lucia is an institution for French language classes and for cultural activities. It is managed by a non profit St Lucian organisation. Alliance Française has a president and an executive committee of 7 members. Its headquarters is in Castries, the capital of the island. The Alliance Française disposes of its own building inaugurated in 1992, comprising of several class rooms, a library and a conference room of 90 seats.
Presided by Mr Cuthbert Elisee and directed by Mr Claude Gonin, with the assistance of Celine Dreher, the pedagogical officer, this organisation belongs to a worldwide network of Alliance Françaises and gets support from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French Embassy in St Lucia, as well as many local partners.
As a symbol of French-St Lucian friendship, the Alliance Française of St Lucia is a place of encounters and a forum of exchanges, welcoming the general public.
